Summary

A traitor with a deadly plan. Two agents sent to expose his identity before he strikes. But danger is closer than they think . . .

Lord Christian Wolverton―known as Wolf in a covert group operating during the war against Napoleon―has been called home from his military duties. For the moment, his family responsibilities require him to suspend his more clandestine activities. But information falls into his hands that a traitor will soon try to tip the scales back into French favor and Christian doesn't have much time to stop it from happening.

Going to the one person who can help him, the powerful Duke of Huntingdon, Christian comes face to face with Lady Alice. She's a beautiful member of the ton with a very big secret―she's also a trained agent and already on the case. Forced to partner with her to lure the traitor out of hiding, Christian wants to quickly close the case himself, before Lady Alice is more closely involved. But Lady Alice has ideas of her own and she's going to prove her theories correct―with or without him.

Danger is closer than they think, however, and it's a race against time to expose the traitor's identity before British lives are endangered. Both Christian and Alice have strong opinions on who he is, but which one will be proven right and can they catch him before it's too late?

My Review

THE MARQUESS MEETS HIS MATCH is a fun story of espionage and romance as the characters try to ferret out an English traitor. Likable characters and plenty of romantic sparks add to the suspense. An overall enjoyable read.

I liked both of the main characters, Alice and Christian, from the start. Alice is poised and plays to society's expectations, but she's also hiding keen intelligence and other talents most gently bread ladies of the ton would be aghast of. Christian is a decorated soldier, loyal, and honest. He also hasn't had a thought of settling down and finding a wife until he come across Alice and finds her so very intriguing. They don't start off trusting each other, but they end up having to work together to find out who the traitor is. There is also a slight love triangle, although there is no secret who Alice will end up with.

I thought the story was entertaining. There is a bit of mystery and danger mixed with an ever developing romance. The romance definitely plays a strong role in the story. The heat level is a little more than what I expected, especially considering the time period and background of the characters, and going in thinking sweet romance. It does stay sweet, but pushes the line a little. There is also a few things that didn't logically make sense to me towards the end as far as the actual technicalities of what happened and when (how did no one hear gun shots and how did the coach even leave?). Otherwise, I felt like the story worked and could be plausible.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a quick and light read that was foremost entertaining. Recommended to fans of G.G. Vandagriff and Donna Hatch. I'm curious to see the other stories set during this time Bellon will write next!
