Summary

Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid, but she’s never lived in the ocean. Ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality, war has ravaged the Seven Seas.

So Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?

That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay than ever. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with Clay, the harder it is for Lia to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

How to Know if Your Friend is a Mermaid

Hi, all! I’m so excited to be here at Wishful Endings today! In anticipation of the release of my debut novel, Emerge, I’ll be sharing some secret tips for spotting a Mermaid.

1. She never goes in the water in public.

Counterintuitive, right? The thing is, unless Mermaids have had a lot of practice, it’s hard for them to keep their legs from reverting back into a tail. In the water, where their natural instincts take over and implore them to swim, it’s nearly impossible. So, most Mermaids won’t risk swimming in front of you for fear their legs will disappear.

2. She tends to wear long, flowing skirts or dresses instead of jeans.

For a lot of Mermaids (who are used to one tail instead of two legs), having layers of thick denim separating their legs feels unnatural. So, they’ll often opt for skirts and dresses in thin, light fabrics. Also, since showing legs is considered daring and risqué in the Mer community, many Mermaids may feel self-conscious in miniskirts. Then again, some Mermaids (Like Lia’s sisters Lapis and Lazuli) might have a whole collection of miniskirts for exactly that reason!

3. She may speak with a slanting, sibilant quality or a musical lilt.

While this one won’t be true for Mermaids raised on land, it’s a sure-fire way to recognize Mermaids who have recently moved here from the ocean and who learned Mermese before they learned English. Native Mermese speakers often emphasize their s’s, elongate their vowels, and speak with a musical quality.

4. She eats a lot of fish.

Especially sushi.

5. She has beautiful, long hair.

Sure, some Mermaids cut their hair shorter to emulate human styles, but most of them wear their hair in the traditional Mer fashion: long, flowing, and brushed to a high sheen.

As for Mermen, they rarely wear shirts ;)
