Summary

Australia, 1814

As a young child bound for a strange country, Sarah Whitaker dreamed of life with her father on his sprawling Australian ranch. But her hopes were shattered when she learned of his death and of her new role as heiress of the largest sheep farm in New Wales. Orphaned in a land greatly populated by petty criminals exiled from England, the future seemed grim. But now, ten years later, Sarah has defied the odds and become a successful businesswoman much to the chagrin of her male counterparts. Hardened by the dishonesty of both her fellow ranchers and the felons in her employ, Sarah has learned one important truth: no one is to be trusted.

Daniel Burton is a lucky man. Sentenced to death for his role in a horse-race scandal, Daniel was granted reprieve thanks to the influence of his wealthy relatives. Now, rather than death, Daniel faces exile in Australia an opportunity to put past mistakes behind him. But when he purchases land with the intention of farming it, he unwittingly arouses the wrath of his new neighbor, Sarah. What begins as a battle of wits, however, soon becomes a warm friendship and perhaps something more. But when Daniel's secret past is revealed, will Sarah be able forgive yet another deception?

My Review

MISS WHITAKER OPENS HER HEART is a story beautifully told about loss, perseverance, second chances, forgiveness, and love. The setting provided some interesting challenges and tension in rugged historic Australia, and the characters were endearing from the first page. This was the perfect combination for readers to fall in love with this story.

Daniel thought it ridiculous that three adult men should walk behind as a smallish young woman carried a weapon, swept the air for deadly spiders, and tested the stability of the path.

I loved these characters! Sarah has had quite a time of it, but her past is what has melded her into this strong woman. A woman who is also soft, who wears breaches and rides a horse like a man, but also can waltz in a gorgeous dress. She's somewhat of a contradiction to Daniel, which also makes her quite intriguing. Daniel has some deep regrets and struggles with those regrets quite a bit, but he is such a good man and kindhearted. These two with their growing friendship and romance was lovely. I loved how they balanced each other and also challenged each other. A perfect pairing.

I haven't read many stories set at this time in Australia (why aren't there more?!!) and I love that this author has taken this time period and not always stayed in England as the main setting as most stories do (not that I don't love stories set in England because I do). It just created a unique setting and shed some light on other things that were going on in other parts of the world. It was one aspect of the story I really enjoyed.

Captain Thackeray started to follow then turned. "One thing I've learned, my friend, is every person you meet has different needs, and when we wish to be a valuable part of the person's life, we must learn them." His mouth quirked in a wry grin. "I suppose that's the trick, isn't it? caring for a person in the way they require, even when it's not how we'd wish to."

In the end, was it what I wished for? Yes! I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end with all the feels present. I highly recommend it to historical romance readers, especially those who enjoy their stories on the sweet side!
