Creating the Original World of Crescentia Depicted in Rhodi’s Light

Crescentia is a unique setting that’s not quite like anything I’ve ever created before. It’s a combination of a fantasy land and a technological empire, with each separate country within the continent drawing from influences here on Earth. For example, the main country Rhodi’s Light takes place in, Areos, is Crescentia’s version of Greece. Adamaris is America, Dunedinne is Ireland, Marceleno is a combination of France, Italy, and Spain, the Far West being Africa, Alastan a combination of Germany and Poland, and the Far East the Middle East, with the outer islands being an array of various cultures and ethnicities. The Rhodi, the assassins the book is based off of, draw their culture from Japan and China, although in the series this group of people was wiped out long ago by their enemies and is currently hovering on the brink of extinction.

It’s a dystopian world, yet, there are no guns. People use spears, swords, and magic to fight with. However, the main characters still have to combat an oppressive group that desires to take over the government known as the Hunter’s Guild.

While writing Rhodi’s Light, I wanted to include as many cultures and ethnicities as possible. It’s very important to me to create diverse work, and because of this, only a few characters within the Rhodi Saga are white. The main character, Dylan, comes from the Far East, and has Arabic roots, while her best friend, Tito, is black and comes from the Far West. Creating Crescentia was a fun experience, because I got to learn about all the various cultures of the world. Although I learned about what makes us different, I also discovered that we, as humans, are more alike than we believe.
