Summary
From the moment they met, Marjie's heart has belonged to handsome Captain Stanley Jonquil, younger brother of the Earl of Lampton. But six long months ago, when Stanley's sense of honor required that he do as he had sworn and return to the Continent to fight in defense of King and country, neither Stanley nor Marjie could have dreamed what the cost of his service would be.
It has been ages since Stanley last wrote, and Marjie and the Jonquil family are plagued by his unknown fate—until the day he unexpectedly reappears. Marjie's joy, however, is quickly shadowed by confusion—the aloof, battle-worn soldier before her is not the man he once was. In the wake of Stanley's blatant disinterest in renewing their acquaintance, Marjie's devastation turns to determination as she vows to help him find peace. But his scars run far deeper than anyone realizes. Despite his feelings for her, Stanley believes Marjie deserves a man whose hands are not stained with the violence of battlefields and whose mind and heart are not haunted by the horrors he has seen.
Honor requires Stanley to return once more to the life he has grown to despise, one he knows will destroy him in the end, even as his heart beckons him to stay with Marjie, the only woman he could ever love, and the promise, at last, of redemption.

My Review
FOR LOVE OR HONOR is both sweet and emotionally moving. Readers will fall in love with these characters, hurt for them, hope for them, and feel joyfully releived in their happily-ever-after. Perfect for fans of the author and fans of sweet historical romance who like emotional depth in their stories.
I loved these characters! I adored Marjie! She is a little reserved, but I felt she was waiting for Stanley to come back to her even though there was no formal understanding between them. I also loved Stanley. I understood his desire to protect those he loved while also protecting himself. I loved his stubbornness. Marjie and Stanley were an interesting match. I enjoyed their dialogue and the way they circled each other (or tried to avoid each other without success at some points). The other characters were also quite enjoyable, making for a very lovable cast.
What really hit me in this story was Stanley's experiences and the violence and pain he has faced. He tries so desperately to hold it all on his own shoulders without realizing that he has family and a sweetheart who would gladly help to share in his burden. The way his story unfolds and as he opens up was touchingly heartbreaking, but sweet. Then you have Marjie with her past pain and fragile heart. She desperately wants to be needed and to help others and has been turned away so many times that her heart is broken. This story really tugged on my emotions bringing an array of feelings of both happiness and heartbreak. Thank goodness this author can be counted on for a happily-ever-after ending!
In the end, was it what I wished for? I loved this story from beginning to end! It is full of hidden gems of hope, perserverence, and love. These characters both deserved to be happy and needed, and on some level, can't we all relate with that? Highly recommended!
