Summary

After being orphaned, high school student Josie Barton only has one person she can turn to when things get rough—a mysterious legal guardian who calls himself her Benefactor. “Ben” takes care of everything for her. He pays her bills, provides food, clothes, and even a cell phone. But there is one thing Ben doesn’t know: Josie Barton sees scary imaginary creatures everywhere she goes. Even her apartment is being haunted by an invisible monster! And just when Josie thinks things couldn’t get any worse . . . she meets the guy from across the hall.

Zeph Clemmont is a man of many faces. He’s a changeling with enemies in all the worst places, fighting to undo a magical curse that could end his life. He loves a good argument and has incredible magical power, but he may have met his match in Josie. So far, she’s the only one who seems able to rein in his childish tantrums and magical explosions. Zeph will have to swallow his pride and finally let go of all his dark secrets if he really wants to break his curse. And with Josie at his side, he might actually stand a chance this time.

Josie's List of Magical Creatures

When we meet Josie Barton, she is just beginning her journey as an aspiring sorceress, braving a world full of faerie baddies with new allies at her side. But she’s already logged some interesting encounters by the end of MAD MAGIC! Here’s just a few of the magical creatures she’s met so far:

CHANGELING

Shifty. Unpredictable. Mischievous. Deceivers.

There are a lot of words associated with changelings, and unfortunately not many of them are good ones. Take that preconception of swapped babies and toss that right out the window. According to Zeph, that notion stems from stories of fae mothers who, upon realizing their newborn child was a changeling and therefore less desirable because of their notorious reputation, would leave their infants with human families. As for what they really are, well, the jury is still out. But as far as Zeph in concerned, he is a powerful force on the battlefield and a master of complex and compelling illusion. He’s a roguishly charming shape-shifter and a born troublemaker. So far, only one thing has been able to rein in his appetite for magical mischief … but you’ll have to read to find out what!

PUCA

As ancient spirits of darkness, pucas are the firstborn children of the one and only Bogeyman (or “Boogeyman”). While many of them have the notorious reputation as their sire, there are just as many who still count themselves as respectable fae who adhere to the old laws. But in MAD MAGIC, we are really only concerned with one puca – the enigmatic Prince of Nightmares, Eldrick Dorchaidhe. He’s the picture of sophisticated emotional constipation, with a low tolerance for nonsense, archaic vocabulary, and obsession with coffee. As with his father, Eldrick’s powers deal in shadow and nightmare magic. He’s got all the makings to become a truly formidable force within the faerie world … that is, until he meets the one human girl who might turn that whole world upside down.

SPRIGGAN

Golems of earth, rock, and plant life – spriggans are barely-sentient beings that are most commonly crafted by sidhe faeries using magic. They can be made by other fae, and even human sorcerers, and are usually intended to act as brute force fighters or guardians. While not capable of complex thought or planning, they are fairly durable and come in a broad variety of shapes and sized depending on their creator’s needs.

JACK FROST

Yes, you read that right. The one and only ice-slinging Prince of the Winter Circle makes an appearance in MAD MAGIC. Impish, whimsical, and a deviously charming flirt, he loves a good magical brawl and packs quite a frigid punch. What his role will be in the future of Josie’s sorcery career remains to be seen, but for now, he seems to be a reliable and loyal ally.
