Summary
When Lena's younger sister Fressa is found dead, their whole Viking clan mourns—but it is Lena alone who never recovers. Fressa is the sister that should've lived, and Lena cannot rest until she knows exactly what killed Fressa and why—and how to bring her back. She strikes a dark deal with Hela, the Norse goddess of death, and begins a new double life to save her sister.
But as Lena gets closer to bringing Fressa back, she dredges up dangerous discoveries about her own family, and finds herself in the middle of a devastating plan to spur Ragnarök –a deadly chain of events leading to total world destruction.
Still, with her sister's life in the balance, Lena is willing to risk it all. She's willing to kill. How far will she go before the darkness consumes her?
Interview
Would you tell us a little more about Lena, the main character from THE WEIGHT OF A SOUL?
Lena is the 18-year-old daughter of her village’s chief. She’s training to be a healer, and loves her sister Fressa and her friends. Her father always seems to be absent on raids that she thinks are unnecessary, but her mother keeps control of their village as best she can. Lena looks forward to also claiming that responsibility once she’s older. But when Fressa is found dead, her ambition and relationships are all put to the test as she embarks on a dangerous quest to save her sister.
What one piece of advice would you give Lena about making a deal with the Norse god Hela?
I would tell Lena to remember that Hela has her own motivations and place among the rest of the gods—what can she get out of Lena? Likely, Hela’s own desires are coming first…
What part or aspect of this story do you love the most?
I really loved that I got to write a story revolving around sisters, but the scenes I enjoyed writing the most were the ones between Lena and her best friend, Amal. He was in love with Fressa and planned to marry her, so it was interesting for me to explore how both of them dealt with Fressa’s absence in their own respective ways, and where they merged and diverged. Lena and Amal’s friendship means a lot to me, and I loved getting to put a platonic male/female friendship front and center.
Did you find anything especially interesting while researching THE WEIGHT OF A SOUL?
I loved learning more about just how far the so-called “Viking” traders and raiders went. I knew that their routes were extensive, but it was exciting to see just how far into Asia and the Middle East that they went, and how those relationships shaped their legacy and culture.
What’s one of your hobbies or something we might not know about you?
I’m a journalism major in college! Though I love creative writing, I’m also big into community journalism and audio storytelling. I’ve interned in public radio and at NASA (doing audio production) before, and plan to graduate this May. I also work as the news editor for my university’s student newspaper! Other than that, I also really love singing and acting—I’ve been involved in some vocal groups during college, and actually just finished performing in our theatre program’s musical.
What are you working on next?
It’s in the very early stages, and I can’t really say much—but it involves mythology (shocking!) and I’m enjoying it so far! We’ll see where it goes.
