Rule 1: Be a widow.
Rule 2: Have an impeccable reputation.

Coming in October: Three Regency Romances by Rebecca Connolly, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Heather B. Moore

AN HEIR TO SPARE by Rebecca Connolly
Widowhood has changed much for Anna—Lady Lyndham—but an unconventional heir to the estate was not something she had anticipated. Nor had she anticipated that he would have no intention of forcing her out, although he has every right to. And she certainly did not anticipate finding him handsome, charming, and unfailingly generous. But Ned Richards, the new Lord Lyndham, has a world of surprises in store for her, and not anticipating them will become quite the adventure.

THE WIDOW OF LAVENDER COTTAGE by Jen Geigle Johnson
As a widow, Lillian Hunter has never been in love and plans to never marry again, so the rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows suit her just fine. Her days are spent attempting to transform her newly inherited Lavender Cottage into a livable space until Oliver Wentworth shows up, asking for her late husband. Anxious to establish himself as a landed gentry in Somerset, Oliver is none too pleased to discover that a widow lives alone in a tiny run down cottage bordering his new property. The fact that she’s young and attractive only adds frustration to his sense of responsibility over her. And confound her, she challenges his every attempt to help manage her affairs.

A PROMISE FORGOTTEN by Heather B. Moore
Charlotte Ashford never thought she’d marry a vicar, and she never thought she’d find herself widowed with a young child to care for on her own. She certainly never thought she’d return to Somerset to live with her mother again, and Charlotte never thought she’d see him again. But Lord Wilshore has never forgotten her, and he has never forgotten their promise made long ago. Charlotte would love nothing more than for Lord Wilshore to forgive her, but too much heartache and too much time might make that impossible. Friendship is all she can hope for, but that hope may be dashed as well.

My Review

WIDOWS OF SOMERSET is a set of three stories about women who find that the life they chose through marriage for security has failed them. They are now widowed and their lives leave much to be desired. Thus their journeys to come into their own and take hold of their lives begin. The characters are each likable with unexpected romance waiting for them, making for sweet, heartwarming stories from beginning to end.

AN HEIR TO SPARE by Rebecca Connolly: This story was my favorite of the set. The characters were so endearing and I loved the way these two meet with all the awkwardness and humor. The romance was darling and fun. Pretty much a perfect read.

THE WIDOW OF LAVENDER COTTAGE by Jen Geigle Johnson: Goodness! This heroine was really stubborn! Lol! I liked her when she first arrives at the cottage, but as soon as a man comes on the scene, she's outright rude, so it took me a bit to soften up again to her. Once I did, I enjoyed the way the relationship and romance grew and the very sweet ending. An overall enjoyable read.

A PROMISE FORGOTTEN by Heather B. Moore: I really enjoyed this story and the characters. I could see how these two came into their situation and the heartbreak they were feeling. I loved their interactions though and that they were trying to find friendship again, at least. Of course what they find is that they still very much love each other. My only complaint was the abruptness of the conclusion due to the hero avoiding the heroine for some time from when they last see each other to the end. Otherwise, another delightful story from this author.

My one criticism of the set is that the stories almost felt too similar and not unique enough. Maybe it was because each widow had the same stubbornness? I'm not sure, but I did want them to feel more different from each other in how things play out.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I love reading these types of collections as I can sit and read one story at one time and enjoy the characters, sweet romance, and happily-ever-after ending. This collection provides that and it was a joy to read. Definitely recommended to sweet historical romance fans!
