Summary

A jilted bride desperate to save her family from ruin.
A bounty hunter seeking vengeance for a ravaged past.
An arduous trek toward justice–or redemption.

Silver Matlock and Jared Newman know traveling together is a bad idea. Bad for Silver’s already tarnished reputation in her small Colorado town. Bad for bounty hunter Jared’s secret, single-minded mission for revenge. But Silver is determined to track down the rogue who left her at the altar and stole the last remnant of her father’s fortune. And Jared’s in a hurry to hunt down the murderer who destroyed his family–even if Silver is too distractingly beautiful for comfort.

The pair takes off over mountain and desert, past bleak homesteads and raw mining towns, hot on the trail of the two villains who took what wasn’t theirs to take. Soon supplies dwindle, secrets emerge, and suspicion leave Silver and Jared at odds when they need each other most. To confront an enemy deadlier than desert rattlesnakes and rocky cliffs, Silver and Jared must learn to forgive and trust and face the question they haven’t dared voice: What happens next?

My Review

I loved The Heart's Pursuit from the first page when spunky Silver and tough and rugged Jared first met. I knew there were going to be sparks and that their relationship was going to be an interesting one. I also knew it wouldn't be easy, and I was right.

Silver had been a disappointment to her step-mother most of her life and then became even more of a disappointment when she's jilted at the altar. What was even worse was that her former fiance stole her parents' living making the situation rather dire. This was where Jared came on the scene initially, but then doesn't really play a role in the story until a little bit later when Silver decided she had to get the stolen money back. Silver really got under Jared's skin, or maybe more accurately, slipped into his heart. He's tough and cold. He has to be for his line of work, but somehow Silver got under that tough skin. The situation of them traveling together was definitely not orthodox, but it was humorous and interesting in parts. It also fueled their relationship and allowed them to develop a friendship.

The plot was fairly predictable, but there were still enough twists and turns to keep things lively and enjoyable. It also helped that I really loved the characters. There were also some heartbreaking moments as well as some intense moments where much could have gone wrong. My one complaint was that the ending felt a little rushed. After spending all that time on the trail, when it finally came time for everything to be resolved it only took a few pages and I wanted just a little more of a climax and then wanted to settle more with the landing.

Overall The Heart's Pursuit was an enjoyable Historical Romance with likable characters, an engaging plot, inspirational moments that felt natural, a little suspense and action, and a sweet romance.

Content: Clean (There are a few references to rape, beatings, and murder, but nothing descriptive.)

Source: I would like to thank Zondervan for my review copy, which did not affect my review in any way.

  1. This sounds good! A little emotional in places, but I do love a sweet romance. I don't read as many historicals as I used to, but I do like them now and then. I'll have to keep it on my list. Must suck to be jilted, haha. At least you enjoyed it! :)

  2. I would think it would be pretty crappy to be jilted, especially when the whole town is at the wedding and witnesses it. I really like the physical cover of this one too. It's a little vintage looking with this cool texture. Very nice.
