Summary

Sixteen year-old Breena Perdit has spent her life as a barmaid, innocent to her father’s past and happily free from the Elemental gifts that would condemn her to a life in the Egrian King’s army. Until the day that three Elemental soldiers recognize her father as a traitor to the throne and Bree’s father is thrown in jail—along with the secrets from his last mission as the King’s assassin. Secrets that could help the King win a war. Secrets he refuses to share.

Desperate to escape before the King’s capricious whims prove her and her father’s downfall, Bree bargains with him: information for their lives. It’s a good trade. And she has faith she’ll get them both out of the King’s grasp with time.

But that was before the discovery that she’s the weapon the King’s been waiting for in his war.

Now, time is running out. To save her father’s life and understand her own, Bree must unravel the knot of her father’s past before the King takes his life– and uses her to bring a nation to its knees.

My Review

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved Threats of Sky and Sea! I was pulled in from the first page with Bree's voice as well as the situation she finds herself in. The story never lagged for me from then on with a constant underlying urgency for Bree and her father to somehow escape.

I loved how instant my connection was to Bree, and then later on to Caden and Aleta. Each character became alive, including the secondary characters, such as Bree's father, Kat, the king, Tregle, and even the ladies-in-waiting. I felt like I got a good view and taste for each one, their thoughts and behavior. I loved how Bree never really backed down. I did want her to think smarter in some places, including building more on her skills in preparation for escape, and not be so easily fooled, but she eventually figures things out. I loved Caden! He was perfect in his role, or roles as may be more accurate.

The plot was well-paced and engaging. I did figure some things out half-way through the story that weren't fully revealed until the end, but I still enjoyed the journey all the way to the end. I loved the mystery surrounding the other country and Bree's father's secrets. I did want his secrets to make a little more sense in how they were delivered and in how the king handled him, but when everything finally came clear it was a climatic and revealing moment played perfectly.

I am already dying to read the next book in the series to find out what happens to these characters! This was a story full of intrigue, danger, magic, power, treachery, friendship, and romance. For YA Fantasy lovers, Threats of Sky and Sea is a book I definitely recommend.

Content: Clean (There was some violence and some innuendo, but definitely clean for the genre.)

  5. Interesting! The premise for it is intriguing while giving away not a lot of information, but just enough (that might not have made sense). And it's YA too! Just my type of book. I do need a break from all of this romance.
