The Offering
(The Pledge #3)
by Kimberly Derting
YA Dystopian, Fantasy
December 31st 2013 by Margaret K. McElderry Books

Summary

True love—and world war—is at stake in the conclusion to The Pledge trilogy, a dark and romantic blend of dystopia and fantasy.
Charlie, otherwise known as Queen Charlaina of Ludania, has become comfortable as a leader and a ruler. She’s done admirable work to restore Ludania’s broken communications systems with other Queendoms, and she’s mastered the art of ignoring Sabara, the evil former queen whose Essence is alive within Charlie. Or so she thinks.

When the negotiation of a peace agreement with the Queendom of Astonia goes awry, Charlie receives a brutal message that threatens Ludania, and it seems her only option is to sacrifice herself in exchange for Ludanian freedom.

But things aren’t always as they seem. Charlie is walking into a trap—one set by Sabara, who is determined to reclaim the Queendoms at any cost.

Praise for the Offering

"This was a truly epic ending to the series."
--Crystal Perkins, Goodreads Review

"The final book in Kimberly Derting’s Pledge trilogy is a thrilling conclusion. I was immediately swept up into it and powered right through. It was pretty much what I wanted with a few surprises along the way."

Tens List

Ten reasons why you’d choose to live in today’s world rather than in a dystopian world.
By Kimberly Derting

1. Creature comforts. I’ve become accustomed to a certain lifestyle that includes running water and electricity! I would definitely miss long, hot showers. And what about TV? Thanks, but I’ll stay put.

2. Not dying. Call me crazy, but I enjoy waking up and knowing I won't be heading off to a Reaping Day ceremony where me or one of my siblings (or my children) will have to fight to the death to feed our district. Which brings me to….

3. Not starving. Because why is there never enough food in dystopias? Where are all the McDonalds???

4. No zombies. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em...on TV and in the movies. But in real life, I'd be the first to die. (Refer to #2)

5. Choosing our life-long factions at age 16? I don’t think so! I could barely decide whether I wanted bangs or not back then, let alone make a lifelong commitment!

6. Holidays, weddings, family reunions…any special occasion you can think of. You never read about people in dystopias loading their families in the station wagon to head off to the lake for a leisurely picnic, do you? And what about Halloween??? When’s the last time you saw someone in a dystopian novel dress up as a sexy-devil to go trick-or-treating?

7. Too much lawlessness. I know we have lawlessness in the real world, but it’s usually not tied to an underground revolution aimed at overthrowing the government. This seems dangerous. (Refer to #2)

8. Freedom of speech. I’m pretty sure I would be among the first to be beheaded from my Twitter feed alone.

9. Talking animals. You know, like in the Golden Compass or The Knife of Never Letting Go. On the surface this sounds kind of cool, but how much would it freak you out if a dog actually started talking to you?!?

10. Starbucks. Need I say more?
