Summary
After successfully completing his first-year professorship, Welsh folklore expert Chris Pendragon has earned a vacation. At least that’s what the young scholar tells himself—but deep down, he feels an urgency to reassess his life, to find a sense of purpose. Hoping that perhaps a trip to Wales will provide him the answers he seeks, Chris embarks on a journey of self-discovery. He could never have anticipated the unimaginable adventure that awaits him . . .
Shortly after his arrival in Wales, Chris is witness to a horrific accident with more far-reaching consequences than he could have dreamed. Following his heroic rescue of one of the victims, an unexplainable phenomenon is revealed: bones that had been broken were made whole with Chris’s touch. Still reeling from this discovery, Chris is approached by a wizened old man with an implausible answer: Chris has been chosen to be the bearer of the Dial, a healer of unparalleled power. But the calling is fraught with peril, and Chris soon discovers there are those who will stop at nothing to seize the power of the Dial. With the help of a beautiful, if skeptical, doctor, Chris must choose: go back to the life he was leading, or embark on a thrilling new destiny . . .
My Review
The Healer was a mysterious story steeped in religious history. It asks the question: "What if there was a person who was selected or destined to be a Healer? How would that work and who might be in contact with such a person? How would it come about and how would others take on the role? You have a history professor who doesn't necessarily practice religion and who ends up in a place where his whole belief system is turned on its head. The journey to acceptance isn't easy. It is, however, interesting to see how someone would react and what other circumstances would surround such a situation.
I thought the characters were all well portrayed. They reacted authentically for the most part and were genuine and original enough to engage my curiosity. Chris is definitely a cynic, as is the lovely Dr. Kathryn Ingledew, although they both would like to receive confirmation and believe in what might be. I really liked Father Llewellyn as well as Michael. They were interesting characters. I can see where a second book would easily begin from where this one leaves off. I'm also curious to see if Kathryn and Chris will meet again.
The Healer definitely took an interesting view of healing and miracles in a contemporary setting. I thought it was creative how the author allowed for confusion and faith for the main characters and greed and mistrust from others who would seek for control. If you enjoy reading Christian general fiction with some suspense, then I'd give The Healer a try.
