This heartwarming story is about eight-year-old Jimmy Longwood, who has fallen in love with a Golden Retriever puppy. When his parents explain that their condo does not allow pets, Jimmy is heartbroken. While skiing in Aspen the entire family is killed in an avalanche. ASPEN, COLORADO

Jimmy went to the reservation desk. “Longwood. Family of three,” Jimmy said and handed the woman his father’s credit card. His parents followed him, both still talking on their cell phones.

“Yes, Mr. Longwood. We’ve been expecting you,” the bright, pretty woman said behind the desk.

Jimmy signed them in. The valet gathered their ski bags, suitcases and boot bags onto a brass handcart and promised to meet them at their adjoining rooms.

Jimmy yawned on the elevator.

“Sleepy?” Melanie asked.

“I’m not tired in the least.”

“Then it must be the altitude,” Melanie said.

“That’s right,” John said as the elevator door opened.

The valet met them, showed them into their rooms and put up their bags. “Your skis and boots will be downstairs in the bell captain’s locker ready and waiting for your first day tomorrow. Just give us a ten minute notice.”

“Great,” John said handing the man a tip. “Say, what are they predicting weather-wise for tomorrow?”

“Every day in Aspen is perfection, Mr. Longwood. But seriously, there was some talk about a snow squall earlier, but nothing lately. It was a great day at the top today. Fresh powder. Just the way you’d like it. There’s extra ski maps of the mountain in the desk. A printed bulletin will be delivered every morning to your room if there are any slopes being closed or whatnot. Usually due to grooming. Things of that nature.”

“How early in the morning?”

“‘Bout breakfast time.”

Melanie dropped the lace curtain at the window where she was peering at the mountain. Jokingly she asked, “No avalanches lately, then?”

“None all season. But you never can tell,” the man said straightforwardly.

Simultaneously, they all shot him a dead-pan look.

“Just kidding!” the valet said. “Ajax Mountain is the safest mountain in Colorado. You should know that.”

“Why’s that?”

“Our records show you’ve stayed with us seven times prior to this trip,” the valet replied proudly.

“Your records go that far back? I’m impressed.” John beamed.

“Thanks!”

The valet left and John raced over to Melanie picked her up in the air and whirled her around. “Can you believe it? We’re in Aspen for Christmas?”

“John! It’s a dream come true! How long have we talked about this? Seven years?”

“No. Ten. Before Jimmy was born.”

“My God, it doesn’t seem possible!” she said happily and kissed John on the mouth.

Dumfounded, Jimmy asked, “How come I never heard you talk about this trip? You never told me you wanted to do this for a long time.”

“This is what your mother and I wanted. We hoped you would enjoy it, too.”

“I think I’ll check out my room,” Jimmy said trudging through the doorway to his adjoining room. He tossed his backpack on the bed unceremoniously.

Normally, upon coming to a hotel, Jimmy was the first to race to the bathrooms to see how many free toiletries they’d been given. He always liked taking the little bars of soap that were just his size. He liked monogrammed towels, too, though his mother always checked his luggage upon leaving telling him that stealing towels was the main reason why their room cost so much. She always made him put them back.

Jimmy looked upon the towels as “souvenirs”. His mother always overruled him.

Jimmy picked up the remote and turned on the television. As luck would have it, the first thing he saw after the in-house cable program promoting the hotel’s features and restaurants, was a Christmas ad in which three Golden Retriever puppies knocked over a plant and the owner had to use a special vacuum to clean the mess. Jimmy threw the remote high in the air and caught it on its way back down. “It’s a sign!”

He raced to the adjoining door and closed off his parents’ laughter.

“Yes!” he said to himself, watching the adorable puppies with tags around their necks. “There is a Santa Claus. I just have to believe. Maybe I will get a miracle.”
