Work Spaces and Offices that Inspire
By Cari Lynn Webb

In my new release, Ava’s Prize, a sweet contemporary romance from Harlequin Heartwarming, my hero, Kyle Quinn has a second-floor suite that doubles as both his living and work space in San Francisco.

An inventor, Kyle has a design lab, conference room and business office situated in part of the suite. But he also has a personal arcade space filled with both vintage and contemporary arcade games from Skee-ball to basketball shoot to driving games along with pinball machines and a foosball table. There’s even a chalkboard wall for the high score earners to write their names on. Kyle refers to his arcade as his inspiration area. As you might imagine, Kyle’s suite becomes the backdrop for many game nights and unexpected gatherings of friends and family.

And as it happens, there are quite a few companies that offer inspiring work spaces beyond the typical cubicles and stale conference rooms. Here are a few of my favorites from my research on coolest offices to work in:

  1. Google’s Headquarters – a campus of more than 60 buildings in Mountain View, California. They have Google Bikes, beach volleyball courts and group cooking classes for their employees. If that wasn’t enough, there are themed offices, free lunch for employees and their own organic gardens. Need I say more?
  2. Inventionland – in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania offers places like Inventalot Castle, Nursery Nook, and Brainpower Ballpark for idea creation and product development (and those are only three of the over dozen themed sets inside the building). And the best part – their employees wear lab coats. I’m inspired just from the virtual tour on their website.
  3. Pixar Studios is considered a closed studio and isn’t open for public tours. But thanks to blog posts like this one and You-Tube videos, I’m already polishing my resume. Unfortunately, I live on the East Coast now, so I’ll just keep using my imagination and eagerly await the next Pixar movie.
  4. Instagram headquarters located in New York City has a gelato bar and living plant wall. And I’ll repeat: A gelato bar 😊 Want to see more, click here. Obviously, they had me at gelato.

Not all work spaces are created equal. However, I think everyone can add inspiration and creativity to their own office. Kyle Quinn added his favorite arcade games from his childhood to his work space to inspire him. I have a growing collection of Venetian masks on my office wall that inspire me. What have you done to your office that inspires you?
