Summary

Poor, unfortunate Spinster…

Prudence Westfall, spinster, has unexpectedly had the greatest misfortune of all: she has inherited a fortune, and is now an heiress. But as a Spinster, and a stammering shy one, nothing could be worse than having a bevy of suitors pay her attention. Opportunity strikes at a house party when the most unlikely person offers the perfect solution.

Camden Vale is no gentleman, and he’s not prone to saving anyone, but something about Prue changes all that. When his offer to befriend her extends beyond the house party, and his feelings extend beyond expectation, no one is more surprised than he. Except, perhaps, for the other Spinsters, and they have much to say on the subject.

Author Interview

1. Who are some of your favorite Regency authors? Do these authors inspire your own writing?

I love Jen Geigle Johnson, Sarah Eden, Jennifer Moore, Elizabeth Johns… And I am constantly meeting more lovely writers who love the same ears I do! I am inspired by so many authors, but in my time period and outside of it! The best inspiration of all, though, has to be Jane Austen.

2. If you could go to tea with one of your characters, who would you go with and why?

Oh, I think I would want to go to tea with Charlotte Wright. She doesn’t hold anything back, and I bet she has some fantastic stories!

3. What inspired the idea for The Spinster and I?

I had created a group of spinsters that had gotten to that point in their lives for different reasons. This particular story starred a girl who was painfully shy and wanted nothing more than to remain unnoticed by the world, and I wanted someone to notice her in a way that would actually work for her. He just so happens to be the most unlikely candidate, which makes it so deliciously fun!

4. What did you as an author take away from writing The Spinster and I?

I think the biggest thing I took away was that we need to look beneath the surface in everyone. There is so much more to a person than what we can see.

5. What is your current WIP? What can you tell us about it?

My current WIP is part of the Spinster Chronicles series, and I can tell you that it is a VERY interesting pairing, and it is set at Christmas!

My Review

THE SPINSTER AND I is a sweet romance about a shy, somewhat mistreated woman who finds an unlikely ally in a man that society has little to say about that is good. The romance develops slowly, beginning with friendship and moving to stronger feelings as the characters get to know each other better. The characters are likable and their story is one that is easy to cheer on. An overall enjoyable story for historical romance readers!

I adored Prue from the start! She appears shy and awkward in society, yet her personality and wit is delightful. I loved how her and Cam began their friendship and how it develops. I appreciated getting to know them away from London before having a lot more characters thrown into the mix. Cam is also a great character. He hasn't cared much about his reputation, which has hid how honorable he actually is. They are a fabulous match! I also enjoyed the other spinsters and characters and found Prue's mom and cousin to be quite villainous.

My only misgiving is that I didn't like the direction the story went at one point with Cam. I felt like he would have done the opposite of what he did, and I felt it drew out the story unnecessarily. Without giving too much away, instead of protecting, he pretty much abandons.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and am looking forward to getting to know the other spinster's as they find their happily-ever-afters. A delightful series for sweet historical romance fans!

Summary

Spinster is as spinster does...

Georgiana Allen is a spinster and everybody knows it. She also happens to be one of the writers for the Spinster Chronicles, and everybody knows that as well. She’s accepted her lot in life, and, along with the other spinsters in her circle, takes great pride in the articles she writes and the influence she has. Then Captain Anthony Sterling infiltrates their group, and her life, and Georgie impossibly begins to hope once more.

Tony Sterling had no idea what to expect when he agreed to break up the Spinsters for his cousin, but he certainly did not expect Georgie Allen. From the very first meeting, she upends everything he thought a spinster would be, and her beauty and wit keeps him on edge in thrilling ways. The more he gets to know the Spinsters, the less he wants to break them up. And the more he wants Georgie in his life. Permanently.

My Review

THE MERRY LIVES OF SPINSTERS is a fun story about a returning soldier's campaign to investigate the Spinsters and finds something quite unexpected in the process. The characters were unique and likable and the plot was steady. An overall entertaining read!

Captain Sterling, or Tony as he generally goes by, was a fantastic character! I really loved him. He's a solidly honorable gentleman and isn't easily pulled into dramatics or opinions, but thinks and observes. He also has a marvelous sense of humor and wit that matched Georgie perfectly. Georgie is also a great character, but she is more complex. Tony is very forthright and you know what you're getting, whereas Georgie appears perfectly respectable and polite but has a whole lot going on in that pretty head of hers. I enjoyed their sparing matches and how their friendship develops and then turns into more. I also enjoyed getting to know the other spinsters, although they made it so there are quite a few characters to keep track of and know at the start of the story. I would have maybe appreciated being introduced to each one spread out over a few chapters in order to make it easier to keep them all straight. However, once I had them down, it was easy to know who was who as they're all so different. I also thought the plot to be slightly slow in places, but otherwise enjoyed it.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a sweet start to this series with lovely, complex characters and romance that feels genuine. There are several more spinsters and I'm looking forward to reading each of their stories!
