Summary

Gracie Miller is a small-town girl who has landed her dream job in New York City. As jewelry designer for one of the most prestigious jewelers in the world, she completed a particularly stunning piece, a custom setting for a large pink diamond. But when her billionaire client Mrs. Katsaros comes to repair a minor issue with the setting, Gracie is horrified to realize it is not the ring she created. Someone has forged her design, and the priceless diamond is gone.

Mrs. Katsaros has no desire to bring media attention to the jewelry heist, so she recruits her nephew, Quinn, and his FBI agent friend, Steve, to do some sleuthing off the record. When they discover that the missing ring is just one of many forgeries in the widow's collection, they look to Gracie for help. They need her to act the part of Quinn's fiancée. From the lights of New York to the shimmering islands of the Mediterranean, Gracie is swept into a thrilling hunt. But amid the search for the elusive thief, she and Quinn find themselves increasingly distracted by their growing feelings for each other. What neither realizes is how close the danger lies and how serious the vendetta is—because, apparently, it is worth killing for.

My Review

THE GEM THIEF includes one of my favorite tropes in literature, a relationship of convenience. It isn't a marriage of convenience situation, but instead a fake engagement that is played out while the search is ont to find who is stealing priceless gems. The plot is steady as things fall into place, and little by little the thief is found while also the fake engagement begins feeling like a real one. With likable characters and a plot that slowly builds to a climatic ending, romantic suspense readers are sure to thoroughly enjoy this story!

I loved Gracie from the first page! She is a fantastic heroine with her down-to-earth personality, genuine warmth, and natural talent. She feels very much like the perfect girl-next-door. Quinn is also a great character. He's more reserved and comes off a little cold at first, but also represents his lifestyle and career. I did feel he lacked a little backbone where Mallory was concerned and that did bother me a little. Otherwise, he was the perfect gentleman and an ideal partner for Gracie. Then there's Dorcas... I loved this sweet lady who is still so lively, but also a little lonely. Her name fits her background perfectly as well as her big personality. I loved her interactions with Gracie, Quinn, Steve, and everyone else.

The pacing for this story is very smooth. I loved how Dorcas finds out her jewelry has been stolen and how everything unfolds. I also appreciated that the author didn't jump to the fake engagement right away, but had a few days lapse in between and other things take time, like checking personnel, communications, working with foreign police forces, etc. It felt more realistic then other stories where everything feels too convenient and rushed. It is a slower moving plot with a slight undertone of danger, but nothing too intense until the very end when things really heat up.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a perfectly sweet romantic suspense. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. A story that is definitely recommended for those who enjoy their suspense on the lighter side.
