Summary

First daughter Audrey Rhodes re-creates Alice Roosevelt's infamous antics in this fun, smart middle-grade debut.

First daughter Audrey Rhodes can't wait for the party she has planned for Friday night. The decorations are all set and the pizza is on its way. But the Secret Service must be out to ruin her life, because they cancel at the last minute-citing security breach and squashing Audrey's chances for making any new friends. What good is being "safe and secure" if you can't have any fun?

Audrey is ready to give up and become a White House hermit, until she discovers Alice Roosevelt's hidden diary. The former first daughter gives Audrey a ton of ideas for having fun...and more problems than she can handle.

Tens List
Tens List: Ten Things that Audrey Found Out about Alice

1. Audrey finds out that Alice kept a pet snake named "Emily Spinach," whom she liked to carry around in her purse—including to parties!

2. Alice worried that people were only interested in her because of her father's presidency. Audrey could sympathize with that insecurity—she sometimes feels that attention is only on her when it relates to her mom.

3. Both Audrey and Alice love to dance! Alice learned how to do the hootchy-kootchy after seeing it at the Buffalo Exposition. Audrey studies jazz dance, and she even gets to take a special trip to see dancers at the Kennedy Center.

4. Alice had a close relationship with her Auntie Bye, and she even spent some time living at Bye’s house (particularly when she was too naughty for her parents to handle). Audrey is close with her Uncle Harrison, and stayed with him during the busy parts of her mother’s campaign.

5. Audrey finds out that Alice sneaked out of a friend’s house to drive unchaperoned from Newport to Boston—and that was at a time when no respectable young lady would drive alone!

6. Both Audrey and Alice read the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. Audrey loves the idea of them “sharing” a book.

7. Audrey reads in the diary that Alice famously embroidered the saying “IF YOU CAN’T SAY SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT SOMEONE, SIT RIGHT HERE BY ME” on a throw pillow.

8. Audrey finds out that Alice once tried to sneak a male friend into her home by disguising him in one of her dresses. (Spoiler alert: It didn’t go so well.)

9. Both Audrey and Alice love to travel. During the course of When Audrey Met Alice, Alice visited Cuba and New Orleans, and plans a trip to Asia. Audrey hopes to go on her class trip to New York City.

10. Audrey finds out that the Roosevelt children used to climb in and out of their bedroom windows to leave the White House.
