Waistcoats & Weaponry (Finishing School, #3)Waistcoats & Weaponry

Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style--with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what--or who--they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train. Sophronia uncovers a plot that threatens to throw all of London into chaos and she must decide where her loyalties lie, once and for all.

Gather your poison, steel tipped quill, and the rest of your school supplies and join Mademoiselle Geraldine's proper young killing machines in the third rousing installment in the New York Times bestselling Finishing School Series by steampunk author, Gail Carriger.

Here's what I thought about the rest of this book (you can read my full review here and Dena's update here) ...

Thoughts about the characters.

All the characters have continued to evolve and mature. They're showing more of who they are and the beginnings of who they will become. I was disappointed in one character towards the end and really upset about another. I'm so proud of Sophronia.

Thoughts about the plot.

Just amazing. All the quick thinking, planning, reacting, and working together. I anticipated some of what was coming at the end, but definitely not how it would all happen. The consequences continued to be steeper for Sophronia's plans.

Least favorite part, if there was one.

Just my disappointment in one character.

Favorite part so far.

Where Sophronia and her friends get out of a sticky situation with the help of Bumbersnoot.

Any favorite lines or quotes?

Felix looked to Soap for support. "You aren't going to stop her?"
Soap said, "Kind of you to think I could, little lordling."
     Felix glared.
- p. 158

"What is it, Lord Mersey?" asked Dimity.
"I just realized how little I notice my household staff and the human servants all around me."
     Dimity grinned. "Scary, isn't it?"
He nodded. "Very. I think I shall impress upon Father the necessity of raising their wages."
Sophronia tipped her head at him. "You think loyalty can be bought?"
     "Don't you?"
Sophronia thought about her friends; money had never yet been exchanged between them. It made her feel sorry for Felix.
- p. 174

They ended with Sophronia sprawled indelicately on top of him. She unwound herself, heart beating double, because Soap was lying so very still.
     "Soap! Soap?"
"Just give me a moment, miss, gathering my wits back about me. Not every day a lad intentionally throws himself from a train. Not every day I get you on top of me, neither, could be the shock of both at once."
- p. 276

Any predictions for Manners & Mutiny?

I definitely think we'll be seeing more of Lord Akeldama, the werewolves, Felix, and the Picklemen. I'm curious to see if a certain character will focus on redemption and how that plays into everything. I think Sophronia will be pulling her resources and making some plans for ruination and revenge towards a specific group. I know that things are going to continue getting more serious. I can't wait to see what happens!

Other thoughts...

There were some fun classes at the school in this book and some very serious adventure. I'm curious to see what the girls are taught next and what scrapes Sophronia and her friends get in to.

Any questions?

Honestly, there are so many, but they would all be spoiler-ish. I really want to know if the crown is involved in all that was going on in this book., if two of Sophronia's companions will be back in the next book and if we'll see more of some characters...

Now it's your turn. If you're reading with us or read this book, what did you think? If you haven't entered the giveaway yet, it's your last chance!
