Blogger vs. IntenseDebate vs. Disqus: What commenting platform do you use?

Go to IntenseDebate

Who do you use for your commenting platform on your blog? Do you like them? Do you have issues?

How about as a follower who leaves comments on blogs...Do you have a preference of one commenting platform over another?

I started off with just using Blogger. It is super easy for followers to use, but it doesn't let me contact them (unless they leave that info) and they don't see my replies unless they come back and check each post they left a comment on. Who has time to do that??? This frustrates me to no end since I want to be able to communicate with followers and sometimes I actually needed to contact someone and couldn't find a way to do so. I also really hate the whole captcha thing. I don't like having to do it when I leave a comment either, but you can get a ton of spam if you don't.

In April of last year I switched to Disqus. Let me just tell you, I LOVED using them! Using that platform was so easy for me and it was great how well I could keep track of comments. I also loved that it took care of spam for me. There was no captcha. Yay! I could also contact who I needed to and find their blogs super easily. There was one BIG drawback though. Internet Explorer users couldn't use Disqus unless they changed their settings and then sometimes they couldn't see it at all. Obviously this defeats the purpose of using a commenting platform. I just didn't find anything that I really liked better and I didn't really want to go back to using Blogger's system, so I stuck with them for a while and kept my ears and eyes open for a different commenting system.

Let me just input here...Why is a commenting platform that is simple and easy to use for bloggers and followers alike so difficult to have on Blogger??? I mean the follower doesn't need a ton of options, only a few things, like a field for their name, their website (if they have one) and their email. Wordpress seems to have unlimited options in this regard. Anyway, moving on...

Then in late January of this year I ran across IntenseDebate and had a discussion with a blogger I follow who was going to be switching from Disqus and was thinking about going to IntenseDebate. She had the same issues with Disqus that I had. Such a bummer! I made the switch and was happy that it seemed to work and not cause the same issues Disqus did. That happiness was short lived though. In the first month I started seeing some issues where Intense Debate just wouldn't load at all. I even re-installed it a few times, sometimes deleting old comments, but it still continued to have issues. I did this again last night and then checked my posts this morning that were scheduled. None of them loaded with IntenseDebate. Ugh!

I decided that IntenseDebate just wasn't going to work for me. The bummer is that I'll lose a lot of comments when I switch, but switching now is better than later, right? I decided I'd go check out Disqus again to see if anything had changed and guess what? Lo and behold Disqus now has some coding you can change so that IE users shouldn't have any issues. *happy dance* I already loved using them before and I seriously am so happy that they fixed the issue (hopefully it really is fixed).

So, this morning I switched back to Disqus. Phew! The nice thing with Disqus is that even if I switch to Wordpress or a self-hosted site later, Disqus can just come with me. The journey to find a commenting platform that I liked and worked for everyone was kind of exhausting and frustrating. I have missed using Disqus and am happy to be using them again! I'm crossing my fingers that I won't have to deal with issues and changing what I use again!

For those of you that have been debating on switching, I hope I gave you some things to think about. If I had realized that IntenseDebate was going to be so touch and go I would have never switched. I hope that I've maybe saved you some frustration. :)

What do you think? Do you have a preference? Is the newer version of Disqus working for you (especially if you use Internet Explorer)?

  1. I know what you mean. I haven't read it, but I need to. Just so I know. I'm not really looking forward to it though since I haven't heard very good things about it.

  10. That is pretty awesome, Jen! There are a lot of great series right now...although really I guess there always are. :)

  11. I think so too! It was one of my WOWs last year and the cover was one thing that drew me in. It is about fairies, so I think the cover fits.

  13. Hey! Lovely collection you have there - I feel like reading them all too! Especially 'City of Heavenly Fire' - I have the date marked in my calender :) I have read 'Natural Born Angel' as I thoroughly enjoyed 'Immortal City' I did do a spoiler-free review so I won't give anything away! :)

  15. I'm in the middle of a lot of those series too! I'm feeling pleased that I've already finished two series in 2014 - Under the Never Sky, Everneath - and that I'll have finished the Shatter Me trilogy in a week or so. It makes me feel like I'm making progress!

  18. Yes, me too! I also don't want the same cookie-cutter hero in every story. It's nice to have one that is much more reserved and sweet, but strong when he needs to be. :)

  19. This sounds like a great book. I love it when the main character has a few flaws and isn't perfect.

  20. I do try to keep them spoiler free. I don't like others ruining a book for me, so I try to do the same for others. :) I'll be over.

  21. Ooh, I'm definitely interested in Cruel Beauty, so I'd love to read a spoiler free review. (As I've discovered your reviews are - at least for the few that I've looked at for books that I've either read or want to read.) My Sunday Post can be found here:

  43. I love Thai Food!!! It is probably my favorite or ties with Mexian for the top. I couldn't resist requesting this. I just couldn't! I am planning on buying a copy for my shelves as I really like how it is organized. I already tried one recipe. I'll email you with details. :) Hmm. That is the thing. Not all books are worth reading. I hope it is worth it. You'll have to let me know if Fire & Flood turns out (not details, just you know if I should hang in there too).

  52. It's terrible I know. The hard thing is that there are so many books that I really want to read and how do you say, I'll pass on that one or this one even though you really want to read it and you don't get approved for everything? You know?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I've heard great things about Scintillate, so that's why I requested it. Hopefully I'll like it too! :) Edelweiss took a while before they started approving me for things and I only get approval for certain publishers, so they're still hit and miss most of the time.

  54. It is so true! I still need to finish the Storm Glass series, along with a bunch of others. I heard she is writing another book in the Study series and I'm really looking forward to reading it!

  57. So many books! I just finished Scintillate yesterday and I really enjoyed it. And The Immortal Crown! I really want to read that one, but I just cannot get approved by Edelweiss for some reason (although I've had great luck with NetGalley). Oh well! Have fun reading! ~Pam

  59. I may not have added it to my review page yet. I got a little behind with a few things at the end of last year and I've been slowly updating things. Love your blog, btw!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yes! Excellent point. Considering how close those Olympics are, it'd be fun to read a novel like this. Thanks for the review link, too! I must have missed seeing it on your blog. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. This sounds like such a fun book! I added it to my TBR and cannot wwait till I get a chance to pick it up (or maybe skip to it cause it sounds so cute!)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have emailed with her a little and she is really great! You really don't even notice that there isn't any content. It just doesn't need to be included and the story just felt natural. Besides that it was just my kind of book and I loved the characters and story!!! She's got two coming out this year and I am super excited about! Thanks for all the comments, Rissi!

  64. It is fun to see what others think. This was better than I thought it would be and I'm so glad that I joined the tour! I'll be over...

    ReplyDelete
  65. It was really good and, yes, also cute. :) It actually surprised me with how well-written it was and how much I loved the characters! I would definitely recommend it to you since you already love figure skating. I love the Olympics and with them coming up, this was the perfect book! My review for Being Sloan Jacobs is here. :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. It was really good. It's definitely an Austen-like novel. Although, this one is obviously not written with the same language style and it has an exciting beginning. I really loved it!

  68. YES! This is a YA novel that's actually clean...? That's awesome. As you say that's SO rare and this one sounds cute so perhaps I can add Kasie to my list of "wholesome" teen/YA writers. :)

  69. I have the third book in the series and haven't gotten to it yet. Thanks goodness its release date is a couple months away! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ooo! This one sounds really cute, Tressa. Thanks for reviewing it. I'd be curious to know what you think of 'Being Sloane Jacobs' as well since that's one I have looked at because of its subject matter - I used to LOVE watching figure skating on TV and since it's a rare topic in books, I thought it might be interesting. :)

  73. I didn't really think about that, but you're right. She had to have figured out some way for that to work. Maybe a dome or special gills? Guess we won't know unless we read it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. I wonder how they're able to survive underwater seeing as they're from the land. It would be interesting to see how the author explains it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm not anywhere close to that adventurous!!! I'm glad you liked it. I just thought it was a fun and really enjoyable MG book. It's definitely one I'll be getting for my kids. They would really enjoy it!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Wasn't it?! I really was cracking up and getting grossed out at the same time when I was reading it. Lol! I love the sarcasm that comes through. He has a great writing voice too.

It is a series, but I've only read this one and was fine. It did refer to the first book, but just once in a while and it wasn't in a way that confused me. I thought it was a great MG book!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yes. I would totally gag over all of these, but especially the buffalo paste! It's a great list though, isn't it?!

At least this one isn't Fantasy. She didn't like Percy Jackson??? That is the first I have heard of someone not liking it. Good thing those aren't the only books out there. :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. It was! I definitely recommend it! I haven't seen any buzz for it, so I'm hoping to start some. Yes. Her name is great!

    ReplyDelete
  79. It was great! Definitely a fun read and sometimes I just really need those and the romance was there, but wasn't the focus. Tin Star was good, but could have been better and without the content.

    ReplyDelete
  80. It is rather a let down isn't it?! I try not to have expectations, but that's pretty hard to do sometimes and of course I am always hoping that a book will be really good.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I still haven't read Allegiant yet, because I'm afraid it's going to ruin the series for me. So, definitely a plus to have a good ending. :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm so glad you liked this book! I really enjoyed reading it too. I haven't had the chance to read the first one yet, but I hope to.

I can't believe some of the things that the author has eaten! Gag. I'm definitely not that adventurous!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I totally understand the "gross" out factor. That was a FANTASTIC post! Is this a series??? Or can they be read in any order? Thanks!! That was awesome

    ReplyDelete
  84. Eww to #10, Buffalo Paste. I can totally relate to the tiny hair thing. My relatives enjoy eating dishes that contain tiny hair. I always avoid those dishes. I don't care if they eat it, it isn't for me unless I'm starving. The rest of the other dishes up there are interesting, but not for me either! I am not that adventurous with food.

As for the book, it is good to hear that Samantha acts her age. That can usually make or break a book. I would recommend to my niece who is in middle grade right now but she told me she doesn't like fantasy because they don't make any sense to her. I am quite sure she doesn't know who Queen Boudica is, not that Queen Boudica is a fictional character, but the not knowing will confuse her. She doesn't know Greek mythology and because of that, she didn't enjoy Percy Jackson.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Buzz Kills sounds fun. BTW, I love the author's name. Fantaskey is so fun to say! :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. I know what you mean about having high expectations for books and then feeling a bit disappointed with the book. I have had this happen to me too.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I haven't read either of these books. Yea for a fantastic end to a series though!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Buzz Kill sounds great. Still not quite sure about the first one, but they were both great reviews!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Gayle Forman (Just One Year) is a very unique author. She really has her own style and voice and is pretty...hmm, what's the word...in your face sometimes...maybe just honest. It's really honest. She lets her characters work through things and make mistakes and struggle. There is always at least one place in her books that really touch me in some way and her characters are really great. The downer is that she also always has content.

    ReplyDelete
  90. It's bad for your time and pocket book, but good to know who you might like. :) Plus books and especially series, can be an investment, so I think it's good to know which ones you might want to avoid.

    ReplyDelete
  91. So the first one I probably will never pick up....But the second sounds great. I love how honest you are it helps me weed out what I want to read :)...hehe! Plus you always introduce me to new authors I haven't even heard of or books I haven't even seen around. I don't quite know if that is a good thing or not, but I love it anyway. :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have seen "These Broken Stars" around but it only got 3.5 from you, so I don't quite know...hehe! great reviews though. I don't think I have even heard of the "Just One Year" series. Thanks for the great reviews

  124. That's a great question! I have done a lot of immature things when I was growing up but I typically don't cater to men. I did hang out with my boyfriend and the woman that he dumped for me. That was three years ago and really uncomfortable. My boyfriend likes to stay in touch with his exes. I put an end to that after this incident which didn't end well.

  139. It is beautiful and I love books enveloped in culture! I'm looking forward to reading your review!

    ReplyDelete
  140. It is definitely slower paced and more of a story about the heroine's internal hope and fight to rebuild her land, but it was good. :)

    ReplyDelete
  141. Thanks! I'm looking forward to reading them! :)

  148. Thanks, Cait. Hopefully I'll like it. :)

  149. I'm hoping The Art of Lainey is a cute sweet read. I got disappointed by another book that I thought was going to be and wasn't, so I'm hoping this one won't let me down. :)

    ReplyDelete
  150. Yep. Couldn't resist! =D

    ReplyDelete
  151. It's hard to resist that green button on Edelweiss. I have a lot of reviews to post though and lots of reading. Good thing I enjoy that kind of thing. ;)

I do like the Iliad, so hopefully I'll like Antigoddess. Thanks for visiting back, Jen!

  164. I will probably be banned from the "reading" world for saying what I am about to say...but since I didn't like reading until I was an adult these books are just not my favorite. I was "forced" to read when I was younger, and everything I read during that time, I still cannot stand. It's sad, but true. Everyone I know loves these books, but I still cannot get myself to like them...

    ReplyDelete
  165. Oooooh! I bet it was super sweet! :)

    ReplyDelete
  166. It should be a fun week! It's not too crazy of a week, which I'm happy about because I want to get a lot of reading in! :)

    ReplyDelete
  167. Oh, I'm glad you did too! I was hoping it would help get the word out some more. :)

    ReplyDelete
  168. I've actually watched one movie rendition, so I know the basic story. I know the book is long, which is why I've put it off so long. I'm glad to have a reading buddy too!

    ReplyDelete
  169. I like that each book is spaced over two months, so plenty of time to get them all read. :)

    ReplyDelete
  170. You have an exciting week planned! :)

    ReplyDelete
  171. Oh I really need to read more Austen as well - so this is a great way for me to force myself to start! I'll be joining up soon! I'm so glad I came across your post!

    ReplyDelete
  172. The first romantic moment that pops into my head is my husband proposing to me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  173. I am so excited that you are going to read Mansfield Park with me! MP is the book I am least excited about (mainly because it is the book that I am least familiar with), so I am happy to have a reading buddy for it!

    ReplyDelete
  174. Good idea to do this challenge! I haven't read all the Jane Austen books, so maybe I'll join the challenge too. I could use a good dose of Austen. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  175. I have seven of these as eARCs already and one that should be coming in the mail soon, so I'm definitely ready to read them and am so excited!!! The hard part is which one first? There are a couple of these releasing this month, so at least I have it narrowed down to those. ;)

I totally know what you mean about content. I look for the same thing in others' reviews, so thank you, Rissi!

  176. Ooh! I can't believe I missed that! I need to go look it up. This was such a surprising read and I love it when books can do that - surprise me in a good way. Great writing and characters too!

  180. You feel exactly how I do. Lol! Yes, it is a gorgeous cover! I've been wanting to read this series for forever, so I totally jumped at the chance to be on the tour for this next week. Getting all the review books was a fabulous bonus!

    ReplyDelete
  181. Awesome! It should be really fun! Janette just has a great personality and sense of humor that definitely comes across in her books and when you meet her. I'll see you there!

    ReplyDelete
  182. Wow. You have fabulous list, Tressa! This 2014 line-up is looking grand. Many of my upcoming, anticipated titles are on this list. :)
...I just wanted to thank you for adding the "content" portion into your reviews. As a reviewer/reader who cares what she reads, I am always on the lookout for good, quality reviews and reviewers.

    Thanks!

  184. I just bought these and pick them up when I go to the book signing on Tuesday! YAY!

  185. There are so many good things that come from even bad things. I've learned that too. Plus I don't believe we would enjoy the good things or even really realize them if there wasn't the opposite in our lives. They make the good and small things so much richer.

    ReplyDelete
  186. That just makes me sad. It would definitely be something I would want to change too. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  187. It was a little different just because the characters' POVs that you're reading from are different. I really liked it. Taylor is awesome! :) I hope you enjoy it when you get to read it. Janette AKA CJ will be personally stopping by next month for my blogoversary with another giveaway. I'm so excited!!! And I'll be seeing her on Tuesday night at a local bookstore, which will be really fun again.
