Summary

In the wide-open landscape of Pennsylvania, Charlotte Martin and her father live a peaceful life on their farm. . . or so it seems. In truth, the rural locale provides the perfect front for the father-daughter NSA operatives as they expertly carry out their mission: using a high-tech computer system, they protect a team of undercover agents. Some would kill to have access to this system, and it makes Charlotte and her father prime targets. It was only a matter of time before this nightmare unexpectedly crashed down on them, and only Charlotte escaped with her life. Before Dwight Martin died, though, he initiated the failsafe lockdown, and now Charlotte's the only one who can access the system.

Writer Jake Bradford left the serene Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia for the hustle and bustle New York to pursue his dreams and never looked back. Until now. Entrusted with his ailing grandmother's care, Jake knows he needs help and he can't believe his luck when a lovely young woman providentially appears on his doorstep. Charlotte creates a new persona for herself and quickly develops a bond with Jake's grandmother. But it's the connection she feels with Jake that makes it almost too easy to lose sight of her reality: she is being hunted by men who will stop at nothing to access the intelligence she protects. With time running out, can the couple find a future together, or will Charlotte's secrets tear them apart?

My Review

Failsafe starts off running. Literally. The main character, Charlotte/Hannah is on the run from her father's murderers. It was intense as the story switched back and forth between her and them as she flees. It was a great start to another enjoyable romantic suspense from this author.

The intensity died down a little as Hannah finds a place to hide and begins to get to know the people who took her in. I enjoyed getting to know them along with her. There were some good friendships developed. I loved how one of those friendships started blossoming into something more, but with Hannah still on the run there was no guarantee that she could follow her heart or that it was safe for others if she did. The middle of the story did slow down and dragged slightly for me, but then it picks up big time as the situation escalates.

I felt like the characters reacted consistently and in a way I would expect them too. There weren't any unrealistic easy parts. There was plenty of danger and Hannah and Jake had to really fight for their lives. If the situation in the end hadn't been so serious I would have died laughing at some of the tactics of evasion used. Okay, I did have to crack a few smiles. I mean air guns and toy missiles??? Pretty quick thinking and pretty humorous in some ways.

I can easily see where other stories could branch from this one based on the other guardians. I would love to hear more about Kade or Ace. Either way, I really enjoyed Failsafe and look forward to Abramson's next book. If you enjoy reading romantic suspense, then I'd recommend picking this one up.

Content: Some violence due to the type of story this is, but definitely clean.

  1. It's hard to believe they only knew about a solar storm only 19 minutes ahead of time, but what an interesting plot line. Since I just finished Life As We Knew It, Vessel is sounding particularly good! Thanks for sharing :D

  2. It's a bit of a shame about the beginning seeming so rushed to you, but putting that aside, it does sound like a pretty decent coming of the age novel. I think I will have to pass this one up though, because it doesn't sound for me.
