Summary

Six months out of law school, Rachel Pearce is completely disillusioned by her job hunt. Despite pounding the pavement with her Ivy League degree in hand, her job prospects are no brighter than the day she graduated. Then in a chance meeting with a former acquaintance, eccentric young millionaire Henry Walker, Rachel finds an unexpected opportunity: Henry is looking for a personal secretary. Swallowing her pride, Rachel sets aside her law firm aspirations for what she envisions as secretarial work—mountains of paperwork and filing. But when she finds her most demanding duty to be daily cookie runs for her new boss, she’s baffled by her unconventional job responsibilities.

As she’s pulled into Henry’s delightful whims, caught in a whirlwind of private jets and fancy dinners, Rachel finds herself inexplicably drawn to this handsome and charismatic man. But reality always has a way of intruding, and logic tells her that this adventure can’t last. When real life inevitably comes calling, Rachel must decide if she’s willing to trade in her dream of success in the courtroom for a chance at love.

My Review

I pretty much ate up this book from beginning to end. It was fun and quirky, with some humor that had me chuckling along with and at the characters, some sweet almost-kiss moments, and some seriousness as these characters had to figure things out. Perfect for those who enjoy reading general or LDS romance.

I commiserated with the main character, Rachel, in a lot of ways with her having this law degree and not being able to find a job. Then I wanted to shake her when she was so stubborn and prideful about passing up on an opportunity. She really grew on me as the story unfolded with her sarcasm, loyalty, and self-depreciating humor. I loved how she stood up to Henry, challenging him, and sometimes just blowing up when he really got under her skin. I was so frustrated with her friend, Shannon, at points. You'd have to read the story to understand. I adored Syd/Waldorf. He was briefly in the story, but memorable all the same. I loved Henry even though he was so clueless sometimes. I loved that he really did have Rachel's back and how he wore his heart on his sleeve in so many ways while also holding back. The hoops he went through - even though outrageous and totally wrong - were also very thoughtful and sweet. Their relationship was messy. I mean all-over-the-place messy. Hot and then cold with different signals being sent by both individuals and baggage being tugged along at the same time. It was frustratingly humorous while also being endearing, if that even makes sense. The pace was great as Rachel and Henry navigated their friendship or boss/employer relationship that had the potential for something more.

Frankly, I loved reading Love on a Whim! It was sweet without being sappy. It was sarcastic and funny. There were rough patches for the possible couple to work through with plenty of tension, both good and bad, that drove the relationship and the story forward. I also like that even though the characters were LDS, there wasn't any religion or inspiration in the book. It was just part of who the characters were, so anyone who enjoys general romance, especially clean romance, would love this story. Definitely recommend!
