Summary

It is 1941 and America teeters on the brink of war.

Outgoing naval officer Ensign Jim Avery escorts British convoys across the North Atlantic in a brand-new destroyer, the USS Atwood. Back on shore, Boston Navy Yard secretary Mary Stirling does her work quietly and efficiently, happy to be out of the limelight. Yet, despite her reserved nature, she never could back down from a challenge. When evidence of sabotage on the Atwood is found, Jim and Mary must work together to uncover the culprit. A bewildering maze of suspects emerges, and Mary is dismayed to find that even someone close to her is under suspicion. With the increasing pressure, Jim and Mary find that many new challenges–and dangers–await them.

Sarah Sundin takes readers to the tense months before the US entered WWII. Readers will encounter German U-boats and torpedoes, along with the explosive power of true love, in this hopeful and romantic story.

My Review

I would say that Through Waters Deep is the best book from Sundin yet! I loved the setting, the building friendship to budding romance, the friendships, the inspirational moments, and the suspenseful aspect of the story. If you have enjoyed Sundin's other books or enjoy books in the Christian historical romance genre, then this is a definite read!

Let me start off by talking a little bit about this setting. This is pre-WWII. The United States is anything but unified. Its servicemen and women are not safe or out of harm's way regardless that there has been no official declaration of war. The main character, Mary Stirling, is in the thick of things with her job as a naval secretary, as Jim Avery is in his job as a naval officer. Not only are there issues with the safety of the country's navy, there are issues within the country in politics and in racism. It was a poor time for Germans on American soil. Sundin did a fabulous job of allowing all these issues to come to light, to play roles in and shape the story, but not overtake it. I felt immersed in this historical setting, in the details of manning a destroyer and other aspects of the navy's shipyard. I also enjoyed some glimpses of historical Boston along with the dancing, fashion, and customs of the time.

The setting does take second to these characters. I loved Mary. She's humble, shy in the spotlight, confident, smart, genuine, and loyal. Jim is easygoing and fun, but also smart, a hard worker, and loyal. They both have weaknesses and fears that they work through, with some inspired help, as the story progresses. I loved how they were old acquaintances who never really knew each other and ended up becoming fast friends with the possibility of something more. Both of them face extreme danger with some intensity that had me on edge. Their path is definitely difficult with both of them holding to some insecurities, but also has what has got to be one of my most favorite romantic endings of all time. I would re-read this book just for that ending.

Again, if you enjoy the genre or Sundin's books, definitely don't let this one pass you buy. I can't wait to find out who the focus is in the next book in the series and the story that will unfold!
