(The Voyages of Jake Flynn #2)
By R.J. Wood
Middle Grade, Young Adult, SciFi, Fantasy, Space Opera
ebook, 318 Pages
June 1st 2018
Summary
Beyond the Moon picks up after the battle above the ice planet Nystal, where Earth-kid Jake Flynn and crew have recently escaped from the Crimson Cabal. Their voyages continue on the other side of the galaxy where magic has displaced technology and monsters are real. Jake continues to grow in his new abilities to channel energy and fly tall wooden ships in space, but struggles with having been named the Justicar, a prophesied champion of the light. Pushing forward, he sets course for new planets in search of allies who will stand with him and help stop the cabal from resurrecting a long dead queen. To succeed, Jake must learn more about channeling and how to balance his new and unwelcome responsibilities with the continued search for his missing parents and a way home to Earth.
Aided and mentored by the young Life Magian, Starla Silvertree, her aged protector, Ottomeyer Riversend, and assisted by veteran sailors Jehnna Marik and Captain Billy Goldbar, Jake must make heavyweight decisions with deadly consequences.
Unicorns, ghost ships, pirates, space battles, magi wielding lightning and fire, dinosaurs, and a Valkyrie – Jake must face them all in this epic sword and space adventure. By the end, Jake will take another step toward adulthood, discover truths about his parents’ fate, suffer the death of a comrade, and muster the courage to charge into a final showdown with the terrifying snake-woman, Celia Sable.
Top Ten Things About Jake's Universe (World)
By R.J. Wood
I did not put these any specific order as to me they are equally intriguing and important.
Tall wooden ships flying in space.
Remember the end of Peter Pan where they fly home in space on a pirate ship? Take that concept and build a whole galaxy around it. In The Voyages of Jake Flynn, there is a whole side of the galaxy where magic has supplanted or slowed scientific advancement.
Star Streams
Rivers of solar winds flow across solar systems and disappear into ‘Drains’. These drains are one-way worm holes that allow ships to travel between cast galactic distances. Jake equates them to sailing through a rollercoaster waterslide.
Channelers Who Can Manipulate Energy
There are special people in Jake’s universe that can tap into the energy of the universe and transform it into certain types and effect. These channelers are called a Magian or plural Magi. They are similar to wizards, but are not casting spells per se, but manipulating and transforming energy into special effects.
Life Magians
There are several types of channelers, but the Life Magi are the mystical healers. They heal, cleanse and regenerate the body or the land. They are pacifists who seek peace, and bind themselves to Heartwood trees which gives them the abilities to commune with nature and to share the tree’s longevity.
Strange New Worlds
Each world in Jake’s universe might share aspect of Earth, but it also holds compelling unique qualities. From the ice fields of Nystal to the Calico Jungle of Abongo.
Fantastic Creatures
Jake visits many planets and each has the possibility of hosting biomes with strange creatures. Some of these are completely alien, but others resemble Earth animals with possible changes or even creatures thought to be fantasy on Earth, like Unicorns.
Sisters of the Horn
There are female knights that ride unicorns calling themselves the Sisters of the Horn. Unicorns see into the hearts of people and only let females of pure soul ride them. Thus, every sister is true, or no sister at all.
Shapeshifters
Whether by channeling or some other natural ability, the Jake’s galaxy has those who can take alternate forms. Is that a normal owl in the tree, or someone watching?
Potent Villains
The cast of villains is diverse. While some are easy to see, others are subtler and complicated. Each has their own agenda, whether is it to serve the Crimson Cabal or their own opportunistic needs.
A Well-Developed Ethos
The battle between good and evil rages on the other side of galaxy. Jake finds himself at the center of this conflict surrounded by characters of the dark, light and in-between. The beleaguered champions of the Creator must hold the line against the mounting rush of the Destroyer’s minions and their vanguard, The Crimson Cabal.
Other Books in the Series

About the Author
R. J. Wood has been creating stories and adventures for others since 1979. A bard at heart, he trained in Drama (BA) and History (MA) while at university. He currently lives near Snoqualmie Falls in Washington State with his wife and children. There he does a little fishing, some adventuring, and of course, his writing.
Like everyone of my generation and beyond I have been heavily influenced by film. I like to think of my books as movies in my mind. I developed my creative writing through fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal RPGs. My degree in drama helps me with story, characters, and especially dialogue. Having an advanced history degree is excellent for plots and characters, but it also helps me with world building.
