Guest Post: Should've Been a Cowboy
By Tina Radcliffe

I should've been a cowboy
I should’ve learned to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter riding my pony on a cattle drive.

I’m a complete sucker for a cowboy. Saturday afternoons were made for a good John Wayne movie (if it includes, Maureen O’Hara, all the better.)

Which probably explains my love of ‘real’ country music. Give me some Garth Brooks, George Strait, Toby Keith or Brooks and Dunn and I’m in boot-scootin’ heaven.

My background is suburbia and my career includes being an oncology R.N and a library cataloguer. Naturally, that is not what I want to write about. I want to research and write about cowboys.

So what’s the lure of the cowboy? I’ve given it some serious thought and here are my top five reasons most of us love and wish we could’ve been a cowboy (or cowgirl).

1. Cowboys are a part of our American heritage. Cowboys were ‘born’ from the Civil War and many were freed slaves. The first cattle drive was in 1866/67 and was from Texas along the Chisholm Trail to Kansas.

2. Cowboys are part of our unique love of film. Action and romance all in one!) The Top Ten Greatest Western Actors of All Time according to IMDB.com are John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, James Stewart, Sam Elliott, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Glenn Ford and William Holden.

Although today’s generation may be more familiar with Scott Eastwood, (The Longest Ride), Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) and Kevin Costner (Wyatt Earp),

3. The Cowboy Code reigns in the West. This is an unwritten code of ethics for in and out of the saddle. It includes how they treat each other, the cattle and the horse. It also includes a strong work ethic.

4. Cowboys have their priorities in order. They love God and country. They are gentlemen and they treat a woman with care and respect. Cowboys protect and love children and animals.

5. Cowboy wisdom is the most profound, and here a few of my favorite.

“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” -The Duke

“I never want my ability to take me somewhere that my character couldn’t keep me.” -Stran Smith

“You can lead a heart to love, but you can’t make it fall.” -George Strait

“Stand straight, walk proud, have a little faith.” -Garth Brooks

“Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” -Wyatt Earp

“Don’t be afraid to go after what you want to do, and what you want to be. But don’t be afraid to be willing to pay the price.” -Lane Frost

And finally, from Falling for the Cowgirl.

“A cowboy finishes what he starts, and that goes double for cowgirls.” -AJ Rowe

“Sometimes the only one you can trust is your horse.” -Dutch Stevens

A favorite picture of me.

I’ve shared why I love cowboys, but what about you? Are you as big a fan of the man, the hat and the horse as I am? Who are your favorites?
