Summary

Orphaned as a child, Arabella Hampton was the unwanted and unloved charge of a cruel aunt and neglectful uncle. The only light in her young life was the kindness of the Jonquil family, and she clung to the childish dream of someday living with them at Lampton Park. Now, years later, that opportunity is presented to Arabella in a most unexpected way: she is to be the lady's companion to the dowager countess. As she takes up residence at the estate, the young woman soon finds that life at the Park is far more complicated than she imagined. The lines of her position are blurred, and she is neither family nor servant. So when the countess plans a grand house party, Arabella is content to hide in the shadows. But one gentleman sees her there.

Lieutenant Linus Lancaster has retired from the navy and is not looking for love, especially when he finds himself entangled in his sisters' scheme to trap him into finding a wife at a house party at Lampton Park. Yet amid the festivities, he's impossibly drawn to the dowager's quiet companion, Arabella. Their regard for each other is undeniable, but they are haunted by their pasts. Can the two find a way to bridge their two worlds?

My Review

LOVING LIEUTENANT LANCASTER is a sweet romance between a retired navy officer who is unsure of his new life and haunted by memories, and a woman who has been neglected most of her life making her hide in the shadows. They both are not looking for nor expecting to find friendship or love. There is a great cast of characters and a fun setting as the characters show up for a house party. An overall lovely read and perfect for fans of the author or those who enjoy sweet historical romance!

I loved Lucas! He is somewhat unsure of how to go about this new future. He wasn't ever supposed to take over as the heir as he is the younger son, but then his brother dies and it comes to him. He knows the navy. He does not know how to run an estate. He also has memories of his brother who he was very close to and so that makes it tough to face his childhood home. I could feel the conflict, the hope, the desire to do well, but also the grief for what he has lost. He felt authentic and was easy to relate to. Arabella is so sweet and kind and my heart went out to her. She is also very much unsure of her new life as a companion. She doubts that others value her and she questions her heart or being able to trust in other people. I loved the banter between her and Lucas and how they equally calm and bring out the best in each other.

I also loved getting to see the Lancaster family and the Jonquils together. Philip and Adam especially were quite entertaining. I would love another story about Philip and Sorrel as there is definitely something going on that is alluded to in this story. Friends and Foes is one of my favorites and is their romance story. The house party provided plenty of entertainment some scheming from some sisters, some male bonding, and some relationships to be built. I enjoyed all the different storylines and how well the author did in not loosing me at any part with the various characters. I also adored the children and their dialogue.

My only complaint is that I was a little frustrated with Arabella still being confused or why Lucas didn't profess his feelings or ask her to marry him sooner. It seemed towards they end they went around in circles, so it felt stretched out more than I thought it should have been.

In the end, was it what I wished for? For fans who have read the other books linked to these families, this is an absolute delight! For sweet romance fans who are unfamiliar with these families, this is an enjoyable read full of heart, family, and endearing romance.
