Because of LoveBecause of Love
MG Christmas Story
Paperback, 96 Pages
October 14th 2014 by Cedar Fort Publishing & Media

For Christmas, all Phoebe Brown wants is to give her daughters new shoes to replace their heavy leather boots. But because they have very little money, her husband refuses to pay for them. Inspired by true events, this Christmas story shows how the power of love can change even the most begrudging heart.

My Review

Because of Love was a short and sweet inspirational Christmas story about the gifts of love, forgiveness, and giving to others. A couple of the messages were especially touching, such as when the mother (Phoebe) said to her husband (Byron) that "Sometimes scars are not caused by blood and blister" and then that he was able to ponder that and have a change of heart. I also loved "Some gifts come wrapped with ribbons, and others by sweet forgiveness. This morning, we have unwrapped them both."

The story was a reminder of simpler times, when families received homemade gifts for Christmas and just a few gifts as well. They were grateful for them. The gifts were made of lots of work and love, which I think made them more valuable in many ways, and the recipients more grateful.

I loved this sweet family, with the three school-age daughters who were being teased about their shoes. They decided to earn money for their own shoes, even though it was an impossible feat. It was really touching towards the end when the girls made a decision about what the wanted to use the money they had earned for. That, and the moment between Phoebe and Byron at the end were very beautiful and sweet. I wasn't sure about Phoebe's choice to hide something from Byron, but it worked out in the end.

Because of Love was an old-fashioned tale reminding us of the many true gifts of Christmas. It's definitely one easily read with children to remind them of the sweet spirit that can be felt at that time of the year. I know I'll be reading it with mine.

  8. It's such a disappointment when you are thinking you'll like a book and you don't. At all. These have all been short reads, but I'm still happy to have gotten as much reading in as I have.
