My Review

THE MATCHUP was a sweet LDS romance. Both characters faced some serious challenges in their past and continue to face more, but find something missing in each other. The characters were authentically flawed, which made them feel real and relatable. The romance had some good chemistry and the story was engaging. An overall enjoyable read for LDS romance lovers.

Let's talk about these characters. Gage is your usual bad boy trying to clean up his act. Even though he really is a good guy, he still gives off that bad boy vibe, which gives a nice spark to the story. He was charming and fun, but also had this way of seeing Valerie and connecting with her and her children. He had his own issues and insecurities too, which made him human. He was a great character. Valerie acted like the world was out to get her in a lot of ways, which I could see with how her son and her had been so criticized in the past. She was a little uptight, but Gage helped even that out. She was such a good mom and a sweetheart, but also a little bit of a spit-fire. I loved her resilience. Gage and Valerie work so well together that their relationship felt natural and easily morphed into something more than friendship as they admire, get to know, and work with each other.

I did feel some parts were a little rushed and would have liked some more development in places. Wanting to know what was going to happen kept me engaged, as did Gage's path to becoming active again in his church. The ending was super sweet. I'm curious to see what this author will write next.
