Something Special About a Paperback

I’m a split personality when it comes to e-books versus paperbacks. I was an early adopter of the Kindle and still have one of the original versions in my office. My Kindle keeps me calm when I fly. I’m not the best of flyers and reading is my coping mechanism. (I picked up my first romance in an airport bookstore between flights when I was a teenager and I’ve been hooked on romance ever since.) One of my fears has long been that I’ll finish a book during a plane flight and have nothing to distract me aside from the In-flight magazine. There is nothing calming about an In-flight magazine. But now my Kindle conveniently stores as many books as I want and gone are my days of stuffing several paperbacks into my purse before a flight.

However, no matter how many books I load onto my Kindle, there is still something special about a paperback - holding a book resonates deep within me. And even the Kindle hasn’t dimmed my love for the paperback. I upgraded to the Kindle Fire as soon as it became available because I wanted to see the book covers on my Kindle bookshelf in color. I missed those rich and vibrant colors of a paperback cover. And yes, I read the acknowledgments first and then the author’s special thank you, even on my Kindle, even though with one click, I can jump to Chapter One.

I have some of the same books on my Kindle and in print. Several paperbacks are so well read that now I re-read those stories on the Kindle while the paperback version stays on my bookshelf for safe keeping. There’s something about holding a book and flipping the page and anticipating a favorite scene or line of dialogue. Picking up a paperback is like sitting down to spend an afternoon with a good friend. There’s something about opening that cover (without breaking the spine – I’m particular about that) and escaping into a new world inside those pages.

So I’ll continue to double-dip and load more books on my Kindle and stash more paperbacks on my bookshelves for what my husband calls an incurable reading habit. And I’m thrilled that I’ll get to add more Heartwarming books to my bookshelves now that Heartwarming paperbacks will be available at Wal-Mart. A Heartwarming story will be within reach no matter if I pick up my Kindle or a paperback… there’s nothing better than that.

Happy Reading!
