Summary
Due to her parents' promise at her birth, Lady Rosemarie has been prepared to become a nun on the day she turns eighteen. Then, a month before her birthday, a friend of her father's enters the kingdom and proclaims her parents' will left a second choice. If Rosemarie can marry before the eve of her eighteenth year, she will be exempt from the ancient vow.
Before long, Rosemarie is presented with the three most handsome and brave knights in the land. But when the competition for her heart seemingly results in a knight playing foul, she begins to wonder if the cloister is the best place after all. If only one of the knights the one who appears the most guilty had not already captured her heart.

My Review
I was thrilled to find out that Hedlund had written an inspirational YA romance, and even more so that it was set historically. The cover is gorgeous and the synopsis sounded promising. I enjoyed delving into Lady Roemarie's world and viewing three knights through her eyes as they vied for her hand. There was an unlikely villain, danger and deception, and some sweet and romantic moments.
I struggled a little with Rosemarie. She had been so sheltered and guided by the abbot from the time her parents died and sheltered by her parents when they were alive. She definitely was consistent with her character. I just wanted her to have a stronger stance and to have already become a leader instead of still leaning on the Abbott so much. It was good to see how her character evolved as the situation came to a head, though slow in coming. I loved the three knights. They were fun and each had their own personalities. Of course I loved one more than the others, as did Rosemarie.
The plot was paced well. There were some things that I questioned (why didn't Rosemarie have a captain of her guard for one...) that I would have liked to have seen developed more. I knew who the villain was fairly early on, but didn't know to what extent and who all was involved with him. I was also curious how it all would end. I liked that the author was subtle for the most part. The ending turned out to be more dangerous and exciting than I thought it would be, and also quite a bit sweeter.
I'd recommend An Uncertain Choice to YA and adult Christian romance readers who would also enjoy the historical setting. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, which I'm assuming will be about another of the knights.
Content: Some violence and torture, but otherwise clean.
Source:I would like to thank the author, Jody Hedlund, and her publisher, Zondervan, for my complimentary review copy, which did not affect my review in any way.
