Summary

Stella was born to sing. Someday Broadway. Even though she is only a sophomore at a new high school, her voice has given her the status as a cool kid. But then a tragic accident renders her deaf. She cannot hear herself sing not to mention speak. She cannot hear anything. Silence. What happens when everything you have dreamed of and hoped for is shattered in a single moment?

Enter Hayden, the boy with blonde curls who stutters. He is treated like an outcast because he is not normal. And, yet, Stella feels an attraction to him that she cannot explain. As Hayden reaches out to help Stella discover a world without sound his own tragic past warns him to keep a distance. But their connection is undeniable. Can the boy who stutters and the girl whose deaf find a happily-ever-after?

SILENCE is a story of friendship and hope with a lesson that sometimes it takes a tragedy to help us find beauty and love in unexpected places.

My Review

Silence was a lyrical, heartbreaking, hopeful story about a girl who lives to sing losing her ability to hear and a boy with a troubled past who saves her and finds as he does, that he saves himself. It was a beautiful story full of family, friendship, and some sweet romance.

First off, I have to say that I don't normally read lyrical stories. They're just not really my type of book. Silence is very lyrical and it took me a few chapters to get into the story, but when I did, I was in. I connected with the characters. I got angry, sad, and happy with them. I started to cheer them on, hoping that they would make it through and learn and grow and find happiness. They weren't perfect by any means. They were teens and their family and friends and all of them dealt with what happened each in their own way. Of course I loved Hayden and Stella the most, but I also adored Stella's sister, Emerson. She was a rock for Stella and and I just loved how these two sisters interacted and how strong their friendship was.

The story takes place over a short period of time, with the bulk being seventeen days between the time when Stella becomes deaf and when she might hear again. There was a lot of soul searching and learning and growing during those seventeen days. Hayden and Stella spend a lot of time together and form a friendship and then something more. There were no guarantees that it would last.

I'd recommend Silence to those who enjoy reading contemporary YA with a sweet but deep romance that is written in a more lyrical style. It was a deeply touching story.
